Chris's kool Sporty chop |
Now and again, I see a bike somewhere that looks 'just right'.
In other words, every detail
is exactly the way I would do it if I had the talent. Chris Broders' XLCH
is one of those bikes.
Inspired by Bill's Sporty, Chris has done just
as kool a job on his.
I love it, and am proud as hell that this crappy webpage went some
way to helping inspire such a beeeuuutiful sickle. And he's building a '27
roadster too! Jeez. Too kool.
OK: here's Chris with the story of its birth:
"I was lurking
around the internet on my usual sites and I left Chopper Dave's site
and looked at this new site, at least new to me......It was Greasy Kulture.
For some reason I just couldn't get over
how good Bill's sporty looked, it might have been the combination of his car
and bike but I was hooked immediately! I noticed Bill left an e-mail address
on his descriptions
and I wasted no time in firing off a mail with a few questions. He got right
back to me
and I taxed him for about a month with a ton of questions.
The plan was formulated
in my mind and I went about looking for a bike. One turned up in Oregon on
E-Bay
and I put in a bid 2 hours prior to the close of the auction. I left the computer
and figured no way would I make it. I flipped on the computer the next day
and low and behold I did get the bike.
I had it shipped down and rode it as is for about a month. It had a rigid
rearend in place but wasn't quite done
as well as I had expected. I cracked the frame after a few more rides so apart
came the bike.
At first for a quick patch
but as it came apart further I figured this would be a good time to do a ground
up build.
Fast forward 9 months and countless hours of welding, grinding, smooth, painting,
fabricating,
messing things up and redoing them again and it finally got finished off.
I met a ton of cool people along the way at swapmeets, online and wherever
else I could turn up parts.
The spec sheet should give all the details as to parts used but please don't
hesitate to email me if anyone
has any questions at all.
I would like to thank
Bill Mize for all the help and just being cool as hell to me throughout this
whole project.
Thanks also go to Jeff Moon for turning me on to early style bikes and cars
and for all the help,
Jimmy White for running a hell of a nice Tig weld on some frame tubes for
me,
Chopperdave for bending me up my
bars, Ivo and Chica
for taking care of me on some hard to find bits and pieces
and for the sheer inspiration I got from hanging out at their shop.
Last but certainly not
least thanks Guy for your site my friend, you kicked off
all this mayhem that drove me to build this thing. I have been having a blast!
Last pictures on this page are just me heading out for a ride and
also my roadster project. All original stuff on this thing, 27 roadster body
on deuce rails
with a ton of kickup in the rear and completely boxed and pinched to match
the roadster body.
Halibrand quickchange out back, juice brakes at all four corners, 16" kelsey
hayes wires going on,
46' flathead which is completely rebuilt, 4" Merc crank, Clay Smith cam, all
machine work
done by Joe Reath, Offy heads
and 3 x 2's manifold with stromberg 97's, 39 toploader tranny.
Drop axle out front that has also now been drilled....... just good old stuff.
Bike is done now so back to work on the car. I will keep you posted!"
